How to improve your restaurant’s Google listing

TapStar guide · updated 2026-10-19

When someone nearby searches “restaurants near me”, “biryani near me” or “cafés open now”, Google shows a short list on the map — and most diners choose from the first few. Your Google listing is often the first thing a new customer sees, before your food, your décor or your staff.

Here is how to improve it, step by step. Most of it is free and takes an afternoon; the part that takes time — reviews — is the part a Google review card for restaurants makes easy.

1. Choose the most specific category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. “Restaurant” is vague; “South Indian restaurant”, “Biryani restaurant”, “Bakery” or “Café” is specific. Pick the one that best describes your main business, then add a few accurate secondary categories — but only ones that are genuinely true.

2. Add your menu and keep prices current

Diners compare menus before they visit. Add your menu to your Google profile, or link to it, and update it whenever dishes or prices change. A menu link that still shows last year’s prices costs you trust.

3. Post real photos — and keep adding them

  • Signature dishes, photographed in daylight.
  • The inside, so diners know if it suits a family dinner or a quick bite.
  • The outside and entrance, so people recognise you from the street.
  • New photos every month, so the listing looks alive.

4. Get your hours exactly right

Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving at a closed shutter. Add special hours for festivals, Ramzan, Navratri, Diwali and public holidays, and update them before each one.

5. Fill in your attributes

Dine-in, takeaway, delivery, outdoor seating, pure vegetarian options, family seating, wheelchair access — tick only what’s true. Attributes help you appear for specific searches like “family restaurant with parking”.

6. Collect reviews every day, not in bursts

Reviews are the biggest lever you control. Recent, steady reviews matter more than a pile from two years ago. The best moment to ask is when the guest is happiest — at the table or while paying.

A card on each table or at the bill counter does the asking for you: guests tap their phone and Google’s review form opens. Never offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews — Google doesn’t allow incentives — and never ask only happy guests to review.

7. Reply to every review

Thank people who leave good reviews by name, and mention the dish they liked. For bad reviews, apologise, don’t argue, and invite them to contact you directly. Future diners read your replies as closely as the reviews.

8. Post updates and offers

Use Google posts for new dishes, festival menus and weekend specials. They keep your listing fresh and give searchers a reason to choose you today.

9. Keep your details identical everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should match exactly on Google, Zomato, Swiggy, Justdial and your own website. Mismatches confuse both Google and customers.

What not to do

  • Don’t add keywords to your business name (“Best Biryani Delhi”) — it breaks Google’s rules and can get your listing suspended.
  • Don’t buy or write fake reviews. Google removes them and can restrict your profile.
  • Don’t open a second listing for the same outlet.

Common questions

Do Zomato and Swiggy reviews help my Google listing?

No. They are separate systems. They matter inside those apps; your Google reviews are what people see on Google Maps and Search.

Can I give a discount for a Google review?

No. Google doesn’t allow incentives for reviews. Ask every guest, make it easy, and let them write honestly.

How fast will my listing improve?

Profile fixes can help within weeks. Reviews build over months, which is why a steady daily habit matters most.

Make reviews a habit at every table.
