How US small businesses get more Google reviews

TapStar guide · updated 2026-10-19

For most US small businesses, the Google Maps listing is the front door. People search “near me”, compare stars and recent reviews, and pick from the first few results. Here is how to grow genuine reviews steadily — and stay on the right side of the rules.

1. Ask at the moment customers are happiest

At the register, at checkout, or when a client sees the result in the mirror. Not in an email three days later. A tap card on the counter means nobody has to make an awkward request.

2. Remove every step

Searching for your business, picking the right location and finding the review button loses most people. A TapStar card opens your review form in one tap — no app.

3. Know the rules

The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in force since October 2024, bans fake reviews, buying reviews, and offering incentives that depend on a positive review, and it lets the FTC seek civil penalties. Google’s own policies also ban incentives and “review gating” — only asking happy customers. Ask everyone, and let them write honestly.

4. Reply to every review

Thank people by name and mention what they liked. For a bad review, apologise, don’t argue, and offer to fix it offline. Future customers read your replies.

5. Keep your Google profile complete

Common questions

Can I give a discount for a Google review in the US?

No. Google doesn’t allow incentives for reviews, and the FTC’s rule bans incentives conditioned on positive reviews.

Do I need Yelp too?

Many US customers use Yelp as well, but Google Maps is usually where local searches start. Focus on Google first.
