What is an NFC business card?

TapStar guide · updated 2026-09-27

An NFC business card is a plastic card, the size of a debit card, with a small chip inside and usually a QR code printed on the front. When someone holds their phone near it, the phone reads a web link from the chip and opens it. That link leads to a page with your contact details — your number, WhatsApp, Instagram, location, website — so the other person gets everything in one tap instead of copying it off paper.

You'll also see them called smart business cards, digital visiting cards, contactless business cards or tap cards. They're all the same idea.

How an NFC business card works

  1. The chip stores one web link. It has no battery; the phone's own NFC field powers it for the split second it takes to read.
  2. The person taps the top of their phone (iPhone) or the back (most Android phones) against the card.
  3. A notification appears with the link. One tap opens it in the browser.
  4. Your page loads with buttons: WhatsApp, call, Instagram, directions and so on.

Nothing needs to be installed on either phone. Phones without NFC — or with it switched off — scan the QR code on the card and land on the same page.

What to put on your NFC business card page

The page matters more than the card. A good one is short and made of buttons, not paragraphs. For a shop, restaurant or salon in India, the useful set is usually:

  • WhatsApp — most orders and enquiries happen here, and a button saves the customer from saving your number first
  • Call — if your calling number is different
  • Google review — the moment someone taps your card is often the moment they're happiest with you
  • Instagram — one or two accounts
  • Google Maps — directions to your door
  • Website or menu

Leave out anything you don't actively use. An Instagram button that opens an empty account does more harm than no button.

NFC business card vs a Google review card

They're the same hardware pointed at different places. A Google review card opens only your review page — the fastest way to collect reviews. An NFC business card opens a page with several options, usually with the review button on top. If reviews are all you need, the review card is simpler. If customers also message you, call you or follow you, the business card does more.

How much does an NFC business card cost in India?

Prices vary widely. Some sellers charge a small amount for the card and then a monthly or yearly fee for the page. Others charge once. Our All-in-One NFC business card is ₹1,000, one-time, including the page, the design and delivery anywhere in India.

Whoever you buy from, ask three questions: Is there a renewal fee? Who can change the links later, and is there a charge? What happens to the card if the company stops operating? A card that stops working when a subscription lapses isn't a card you own.

Do NFC business cards work on every phone?

NFC works on iPhone XR and newer, and on most Android phones from the last several years. On some Android phones NFC is switched off by default — which is why the QR code matters. Between the two, practically every smartphone is covered.

Is a digital business card worth it for a small business?

For a business with a counter — a restaurant, salon, bakery, clinic or shop — usually yes, because one card serves every customer and never runs out. For someone who hands cards out at meetings, it replaces boxes of reprinted paper. The real value isn't the novelty of tapping. It's that the customer ends up inside your WhatsApp chat, your Instagram and your Google review page instead of with a piece of paper they'll lose.

Common questions

Does an NFC business card need an app?

No. Newer iPhones and most Android phones read NFC natively, and any phone camera can scan the printed QR code.

Can I update my NFC business card after printing?

If the card points to a page that the seller can edit, yes — the page changes and the card stays the same. TapStar cards work this way.

How long does an NFC business card last?

The chip has no battery and no expiry. A PVC card lasts years; the printing usually wears before the chip does.
